As the saying goes, health is wealth. A healthy body and mind are needed for all activities in our lives. A healthy mind goes hand in hand with a healthy body. Falling ill disrupts our routines and often restricts our lifestyle severely. If one member of the family falls ill it tends to affect the entire family, particularly if the person who is ill needs care, or is ill for a prolonged period of time. Therefore, it is important to stay healthy to maintain the quality of life.
The first way to stay healthy is to ensure you eat a healthy and balanced diet. We must ensure that we eat foods from all food groups in the food pyramid. Vegetables and fruits supply us antioxidants that keep our body healthy. Proteins help to build and repair our muscles. Carbohydrates give us energy and fat contributes to development and repair of our nervous system. Well-balanced meals covering different kinds of food give variety to meals and also keep us healthy. Sometimes, multivitamins can be taken as dietary supplements.
Getting enough exercise is important for staying healthy. Thirty minutes of any moderate exercise five days a week is enough to keep the body in good shape. The blood circulation increases in the body keeping all organs healthy. If someone does not have the time to exercise at a gym, brisk walking will keep the body fit.
The daily routine should include some kind of stress management activity. As we all know, stress can kill or leave us feeling depressed and unable to cope. We cannot escape stress – it is a part of our daily lives in this century. But we need to learn to manage stress to prevent it from destroying our body and mind. Meditation is very effective in dealing with stress. It clears out our mind and gives us confidence. Practicing yoga can also manage stress. It is important to get enough sleep every night; the sleep needs to be uninterrupted, for six to eight hours a night.
Lastly, it is important to visit the doctor from time to time. Routine tests can tell the doctor a lot about our health. Sometimes, when lifestyle changes are not enough to stay healthy, some precautions must be in place. Cholesterol and blood pressure checks are simple checks that can be used to correct problems in our bodies through medication.
