Professional Life Coaching For Your Change of Career
Posted on November 5th, 2008 by Maryann in Personal Development ArticlesMy good friend Ros Bott provides professional life coaching and specializes in helping people who are looking for a change of career!
Todays article will look at the service Ros provides her clients and answer some questions for you!
One of the most major decisions you will ever make in your life, is a change of career or returning to a career after some time out of the work force. Most of us have ideas about what we would love to do, but time after time, we supress our dreams in order to have a more secure income, or to please our parents (even when we are middle-aged!) or to do the “right” thing.
For these reasons, a change of career can be fraught with conflict and indecision: a battle between head and heart. Very often people end up staying in the job they dislike because their fear of change is too much. They decide that “they didn’t really want to change anyway”, or “things are really not that bad” and settle down into a mediocre existence.
Working with a professional life coach can help to overcome these fears, develop your self confidence and self belief and assist you in taking the action you need in order to achieve a career that you can really love.
Ros Bott is a professional career coach who works very much with her clients’ self-limiting beliefs before moving on to creating goals and action plans. The first two questions she will usually ask a new client are: “What do you want to achieve?” and “What is stopping you from achieving it?”
“If a person is stuck in a rut and unable to move forward, you will generally find that the main thing that stops them are their own beliefs”, she says, “These beliefs might be things they believe about themselves or about life in general, but very rarely are people truly stopped by external circumstances – these can always be overcome when self belief is strong enough.”
Ros will sometimes look at what has created a particular belief, and this might involve looking at past events in life, particular in childhood where negative beliefs can be learned very quickly through negative parental or sibling feedback. However, life coaching never involves deep analysis of the past – this is something to be dealt with only by a professional counsellor or psychologist where an individual has severe traumatic issues to deal with. In coaching, it is enough that the client recognises where their belief came from, because then they can begin to work on letting it go, and developing some new and positive ones.
Surprisingly, once the belief is recognised, the process of turning it around is quite simple. This will often come as a surprise to clients who have lived a life time believing one thing, and then find that they always had a choice of what to believe and what they could do.
For an example, Ros recently worked with a very creative individual who could not understand why she could never keep up motivation on anything she started. She wanted to be in a creative career, but was worried that her lack of commitment would cause her to fail. During the third session with Ros, she discovered that she had a belief that she was not allowed to have fun (this arose out of never being allowed to play as a child), and therefore everything she started became too serious to enjoy. She is now working on a new set of beliefs, and finding lots of ways to have fun in her work!
Once a client has started working on eradicating their self-limiting beliefs, and choosing new beliefs, Ros will then start to work on helping them to set goals and create an action plan. Goal-setting is a major part of the life coaching experience, and will help a client to become very clear and focussed about what they want and how to get there.
It is at this stage that the client will need much support. While they may be overjoyed at discovering and choosing new positive beliefs, those old beliefs will still turn up from time to time, and occasionally new ones will surface which need to be worked on, while people are planning their change of career.
Ros provides discounts for individuals who book four sessions in advance. She says that making a commitment to at least four coaching sessions is of great benefit for the client, and on average, most people will need at least twelve sessions before they decide that they no longer need her services.
Ros also provides professional life coaching for people who run home businesses, and offers online coaching via Skype, email or instant messaging as well as more traditional face-to-face or telephone coaching. She has a variety of “packages” to suit all budgets, which can be seen at her website at www.career-life-coach.com
I can personally recommend my good friend Ros as a kind and caring individual who truly cares about her clients and has a deep passion for her chosen field.
If you would love a change of career but are unsure or reluctant to take those crucial first steps, then professional life coaching will be of great benefit to you.
